A Pokémon Sun and Moon trailer featuring new Pokémon was released this past week. After seeing these new Pokémon, I decided that my first new post will about my thoughts on them. Please note that I do not play competitively so I will probably stick to design and abilities as opposed to IVs, EVs, and competitive possibilities. Also, I did see what other's thought about these Pokémon as a form of research but I will not let their opinions color mine in any way. Also, I will go in 'trailer' order so I can keep my thoughts organized. So without further ado, here are my thoughts on the new Pokémon that have been announced for Pokémon Sun and Moon.
Wimpod
Type: bug/water
Ability: Wimp Out - when down to less than half of its HP, it will flee/switch out of battle
I have been longing for a new bug/water type Pokémon ever since Surskit back in Generation 3. I like Wimpod's design, which appears to be based on the horseshoe crab. It's ability has the potential to be both helpful and annoying. I guess it depends upon whether you're using it or it's being used against you. I will definitely try to catch one of these when I get my copy of Pokémon Moon. My only hope is that if this Pokémon evolves, it will not lose the water typing. I feel that bug/water has a lot of potential and please, Game Freak, don't discard it in evolution (if that happens).
Bounsweet
Type: Grass
Abilities: Leaf Guard (no status ailments in sunny weather except confusion and infatuation) or Oblivious (attraction or charming moves/abilities don't work on it)
What do you get when you combine bounce and sweet? You get an adorable fruit-based Pokémon that bounces around! Now, some have called this a Cherubi clone, but I don't think so. I believe it is based on the Mangosteen fruit. Hey, when your region is based on Hawaii, why not have some Pokémon based on tropical fruit? I think it's cute. Besides, who's to say it won't evolve into something even better? As far as abilities go, it apparently will be immune to major status ailments or minor ones. As far as moves, I wonder if it will learn Leaf Blade or Giga Drain? The potential is there, like in Petilil or Oddish. You just have to look past its appearance to see it.
Comfey
Type: Fairy
Abilities: Flower Veil (ally Grass-type stats can't be lowered in double and triple battles) or Triage (healing moves get the highest priority during battle)
When you think of Hawaii, you think of flower leis or necklaces of flowers. When I first saw this Pokémon, I thought it seemed like a stupid idea to have a Pokémon that's a lei. Once I saw it in action and read its Pokedex entry, I realized that the Pokémon is the tiny green creature holding the flower necklace. It actually collects flowers, makes them into a necklace, then gives it away to someone it likes. I love this idea! Comfey is super cute and it's Triage ability is super useful. I will definitely have one on my team in Pokémon Moon.
Mudsdale
Type: Ground
Abilities: Own Tempo (cannot be confused) or Stamina (defense is raised every time it is hit in battle)
When I first saw this Pokémon in a video thumbnail, I thought 'oh no, they made another Fire-type horse. Wasn't Rapidash enough?' However, I has thrilled to learn that it is a Ground type! I like the tough look of this Pokémon. This Pokémon has the potential to be a defensive beast. Imagine staring down an 8 ft. tall, 2000 lb. horse, whose defense will climb every time you hit it with an attack due to the Stamina ability. Wow. Granted, it is weak to Water, Ice, and Grass, but still, that is impressive. Due to its appearance, I find it highly unlikely that it will evolve. Still, I know that I want to catch one of these, but I don't know if I will use it on my team.
Mimikyu
Type: Ghost/Fairy
Ability: Disguise - its outfit takes the first hit in every battle so you can take one hit without any damage
When I saw the first Ghost/Fairy type, I thought 'boy, does that look creepy.' When I saw the Pokémon in action and read its Pokedex entry, it made more sense. This poor little lonely ghost cannot stand daylight and thinks that if it looks like Pikachu, it will be loved. Aww....now I have to catch one. There has been some speculation that the disguise can be different Pokémon in addition to Pikachu but I'm not so sure about that. When Game Freak releases more info, then we will know one way or another. Mimikyu is a mystery that is still creepy, but endearing (like Litwick). I eagerly await learning more about this Pokémon as the game release date gets closer.
Bewear
Type: Normal/Fighting
Ability: Fluffy(physical damage is halved, fire-type damage is doubled) or Klutz (can't hold items)
First of all, the typing is interesting. It has been seen only in Mega Lopunny or Meloetta's Pirouette Form up to this point. I like being able to encounter this typing more easily. However, the design is....not the best. Bewear just looks...weird. From the black body and pink head to the odd ear headband thing, this Pokémon bewilders me. It's basically a big, super strong teddy bear that can either take hits while being highly flammable or cannot hold any items. The idea is solid, but the rest is just-not. I really think Game Freak dropped the ball on this one. Ursaring is a big fierce brown bear, Beartic is a big fierce polar bear, and Pangoro is a big fierce panda (I know, not actually a bear). The point is, there are so many other things that they could have done with this Pokémon. If they wanted cuddly - that could have been great...just not like this.
Anyway, thanks for reading my thoughts on these (mostly) fantastic new Pokémon. This is just my opinion, so feel free to leave yours in the comment section. I got my info from the Pokémon youtube channel, the Pokémon Sun and Moon website, and Pokémondb.net. You can check these out yourself and even find more opinions all over Google and Youtube. I hope you enjoyed this post and that you will read future posts. Until the next post, blog happy!
