Thoughts on Pokemon Sun and Moon

Today I am going to review Pokémon Sun and Moon - specifically Moon since that is the version that I played. This review has been long overdue but I had other things that I wanted to finish first. Anyway, let's get to it.

In general, the game is very enjoyable. The graphics and music are amazing. The trials are a different spin on the usual gyms. They are okay but they feel more difficult than a gym since you don't have trainers to fight on the way to the leader or in this case, totem Pokémon. The trial leaders are adequately difficult and the overall idea is not bad. I just prefer gyms - that's all. Overall, I will say that I like this game and new generation.

Still, there are a few things I don't like. First, considering that we have more access to water than ever before, why are we limited to where we can fish?! This makes no sense to me. Any other generation, we can fish whenever we get to a water edge. Why was this changed?! On the subject of water, we get to my second peeve: Pyukumuku.

Oh don't get me wrong, I love this Pokémon. The problem is that it does not get a single attacking move (Counter doesn't count). To add to the frustration, it also doesn't get a single Water type move except Water Sport and Soak. It's a Water type Pokémon! Seriously, Game Freak, what was the point of giving us a Pokémon that doesn't get a single stab move?! Still, it is adorable and it won me over when I used it in my game. I still was so annoyed when I couldn't teach it Surf - especially after all the time it took me to find it so I could catch it.

This brings us to another issue: the Pokémon. The designs were fairly good for the most part. The issue comes in two parts: lack of new Pokémon and horrible encounter rates. On the first part, it was like sixth generation all over again: very few new Pokémon. I would prefer fewer new features to more new Pokémon. On the second part, why are the newest Pokémon the hardest to find? Seriously, some of the Pokémon have low encounter rates compared to old Pokémon. Do you know how many Lillipups and Tentacools I encountered?!

Let's not forget Pokémon that can only be encountered via the SOS method like Mareanie. I like the gimmick but I went through my entire game looking for one only to find out about the SOS part when I was done. I avoided looking it up because I didn't want to accidentally spoil anything about the game. Mareanie should have been encounterable like normal.

My next issue involves clothes. When you play as a female in Moon, and go to Heahea City Boutique, you will find this little item called the 'Cobra Tank'. It is a black tank top that depicts a brown and black Arbok. Arbok is purple and its shiny is gold. When I saw this, I immediately thought 'ooh, Alolan Arbok is in this game'. I was very disappointed to discover that this was not the case. Why are we being teased this way, Game Freak? On the subject of customization, it was better than sixth generation but still felt lacking.

That reminds me of another thing: Alolan forms. With exception of Vulpix and Sandshrew, the rest were a bit of a disappointment. It was as if all the creative energy was spent on the first two that I mentioned and the rest were just given whatever types were convenient. Alolan Dugtrio - seriously, blonde hair? I get the Pele's hair reference but it still seems...lame.

Hair-that brings us to the last disappointment: the grooming feature. Otherwise known as Pokémon Refresh, it gives you the ability to bond further with your Pokémon through grooming. Oh wait, that's only when the game allows it - aka only after battles. Other than that, you can't use the grooming tools. You can only feed your Pokémon some beans and pat it on the head. What fun.

Other that the above grievances, I found Pokémon Moon to be very enjoyable. I would recommend it to others and play it again. I hope the rumored third game fixes many of the issues that the previous ones had. Still, anything is possible. That concludes this week's post. I hope you enjoyed it and will Follow me so you don't miss any future posts. Have a good weekend, and as always, keep on gaming :).
