As any Pokémon player knows, nothing is more exciting than finding (and hopefully catching) a shiny or alternately colored Pokémon. These Pokémon are rare and that should make their designs that much more amazing compared to their regular coloring. Unfortunately, some shiny Pokémon don't live up to the hype and that's a shame. I am starting a new series of posts where I pick 5 Pokémon in each generation (1 - 7) that I feel could have better a better shiny form. As always, I just manipulated some images from Bulbapedia and all rights belong to the images' respective owners. I am merely using this to show my ideas for better shinies. Without further ado, let's jump into it!
Butterfree
Go ahead and say it - 'how predictable, it's your favorite Pokémon'! I know, but that make its horrible shiny even more disappointing. In fact, Butterfree's shiny may be one of my least favorite shinies of all time. Its body color becomes more purple and its hands, feet, and nose turn a reddish pink. Its eyes become a bright neon green. It's pretty unappealing but I understand that at the time, shinies were made by palette swapping. Still, it could have been changed like so many other shinies in Generation 6. My shiny (as shown) is a bit different. I basically lightened the body to an almost pastel cornflower blue with light green feet, hands, and nose. The eyes I made a softer lavender. I did notice as I was saving the image that I was very close to the color palette that I used for my Alolan Butterfree idea. This wasn't intentional - I just like the color combination.
Spearow
Spearow is one of the Pokémon that you don't see that often. With better options like Pidgey and Farfetch'd available, there is little reason to catch a Spearow. Its shiny doesn't add to its appeal at all. It's a light olive color with golden beak, wings, and feet. Its belly becomes a light reddish color. It's quite unappealing and again, no change was made in Generation 6. In fact, the shiny looks worse in the Generation 6 3D model. I decided that I would show this Pokémon some love with a new palette. I found this dark gray to be the most appealing since bright colors don't really seem to fit this Pokémon well at all. Not only does this look better than the original color, it also stands out really well so that you immediately know that you've found something special when you encounter it.
Farfetch'd
This is another Pokémon that you don't see often. I adore Farfetch'd and feel it deserves a better shiny. The original body was that reddish pink color with a brighter yellow for the beak and feet. Even its leek got brighter in color which makes little sense considering that body coloration doesn't affect randomly held objects. Anyway, I opted for a nice dark blue that looks more realistic (like its original coloring) and not so bright. I think it works nicely and gives it a dapper appearance.
Krabby
Krabby is another rarely-seen Pokémon. Its shiny is also underwhelming. The brownish orange body turns yellow and that's it. It's not the worst shiny, but it is definitely not the best. Generation 6 only made the yellow paler which again isn't that bad. I feel it could be improved upon greatly and I love this color idea that I came up with based on the Blue Dungeness crab. I think this color is great and really catches your eye - again letting you know when you encounter it that it is special.
Chansey
The last shiny that I will fix is Chansey. Chansey is notorious for being hard to find and even harder to catch in the original games. You would think that its shiny would be equally amazing but no...it's just a light green that makes Chansey look ill. In Generation 6, the green was darkened to make it look even more ill. Again, it's not the worst shiny but it could use improvement. I was playing around with the color and discovered this golden yolk color. I think it fits Chansey's happy personality while also giving a nod to the 'egg' influence in its design. I don't usually like yellow shinies but I do like this one a lot.
Well, that does it for this post. I hope you enjoyed this post and will follow me so you don't miss out on future posts. Leave a comment below telling me what you think of my shinies, which shinies you want think could be changed and how you would change them. Have a great weekend and stay safe during all this bad weather. Keep those impacted by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma in your thoughts and as always, keep on gaming!!
